CAN ALL STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM TUTORING?

The short answer to this question is- absolutely!!
All students have the potential to benefit from tutoring if they are engaging with content that is not too easy or too difficult for them, if they are studying material that is relevant to what they are learning at school and if they have a positive relationship with their tutor.
One of my hobbies is snow skiing. I recall trying SO hard to ride the T-Bar up to the top of the beginners slope and dismount without sliding backwards into the people riding up the mountain behind me. My next challenge was to turn around to face the down hill slope and ski (slowly snow-plough) down without crashing into others or falling over. Despite participating in many learn to ski classes, and then repeatedly practising on beginners slopes, I took several years to learn how to ski reasonably well. It wasn’t until I had a private lesson with an expert who by observing me attempting to ski, was able to see what I was doing wrong and correct my technique, through explicit instruction and demonstrations. I learned more in that individual lesson than I had in years of attending group lessons and practising a lot in between those lessons! Being taught individually completely altered my skiing progress and ability, and was responsible for the newly found confidence and enjoyment I had in skiing.
As a classroom teacher, I understand that participating in just right tutoring sessions can advance a student’s self-confidence, their skills, their knowledge and their academic achievements at school. I have 25 students in my class and they each have their preferred style of learning, as well as different strengths and areas that challenge them. Many of my students work with me one to one in the classroom, after school, before school and during the breaks just to access an extra one to one explanation or demonstration to improve or clarify their understandings in an area. Whilst I know one to one individualised instruction is very effective educationally for my students, the reality is that due to the number of students I have in my class and the myriad of responsibilities I have at school including the pastoral care of students, yard duty, parent interviews, staff meetings, professional development and training commitments, behaviour management, reporting, planning and so on, it is impossible for me to provide each student with individualised instruction in every subject, everyday.
This understanding, coupled with my experience of learning how to ski led to the creation of Optimise Learning, an educational organisation that works in partnership with teachers and schools to maximise the academic achievements of young people. Optimise Learning has developed a range of resources and teaching materials that are based on the Australian National Curriculum. Tutors are trained, and use brain compatible teaching strategies to maximise the effectiveness of their sessions.
Over the years, Optimise Learning certified tutors have assisted students of all ages and abilities to improve their self-confidence, their attitude towards themselves as learners and their achievements at school. Optimise Learning’s tutoring services have assisted a wide variety of students all over Australia, including;

Our tutors take the time to get to know each student as a young person, as well as, as a student. We develop a thorough understanding of each student’s learning style, their strengths and the areas that challenge them. Our tutors strive to ensure that every student experiences success in every lesson, to remind them of their capabilities. It is vital for every student to regularly experience success, to develop and maintain a positive and confident perspective of them selves as learners.
If it weren’t for the private ski lesson I had, I believe I would still be slowly snow-ploughing down beginners slopes. Just think how our individualised tutoring services could assist your child to reach their potential at school.
