So your child has been invited to participate in the upcoming APSMO mathematics competitions that begin in May.
For many students, this invitation is exciting. It recognises strong mathematical ability and an interest in tackling challenging problems. At the same time, both students and parents often wonder how best to prepare so the experience is positive and confidence-building.
The APSMO Maths Olympiad and Maths Games competitions are quite different from typical classroom mathematics. With some targeted preparation, students can learn problem-solving strategies that help them approach these challenges more confidently and enjoy the process of mathematical thinking.
This guide explains how APSMO competitions work, why preparation can be beneficial, and how APSMO preparation workshops can support students in Years 5–8.
2026 APSMO Competition Dates
The APSMO Maths Olympiad competitions are held four times during the year, beginning in Term 2. Each contest includes a set of challenging problems designed to test reasoning, logical thinking, and creative problem solving.
The 2026 APSMO competition dates are:
- Competition 1: Wednesday 6 May 2026
- Competition 2: Wednesday 10 June 2026
- Competition 3: Wednesday 29 July 2026
- Competition 4: Wednesday 9 September 2026
Each competition paper contains five challenging mathematical problems, which students attempt within a set time limit. These questions are designed to stretch students’ thinking and reward logical reasoning rather than simply applying familiar formulas.
For many students, participating in these competitions is their first experience with Olympiad-style mathematics.
How APSMO Competitions Differ from School Mathematics
Many parents assume that strong school mathematics results automatically prepare students for Olympiad competitions.
However, APSMO problems require a different type of thinking.
Rather than practising familiar procedures, students must:
- recognise hidden patterns
- think creatively about possible strategies
- break complex problems into smaller steps
- test ideas and revise their approach
- explain their mathematical reasoning clearly
Even very capable mathematics students often find Olympiad problems challenging the first time they encounter them.
This is not because they lack ability — it is because they have not yet learned the specific problem-solving strategies used in Olympiad mathematics.
The good news is that these strategies can be taught and practised.
The Benefits of APSMO Preparation
Students who participate in APSMO preparation programs often approach the competitions with far greater confidence. Preparation allows students to become familiar with the style of questions and learn structured approaches for solving them.
Through guided practice, students develop:
- Stronger problem-solving strategies – students learn how to approach unfamiliar problems logically.
- Greater mathematical flexibility – students discover that many problems can be solved using multiple strategies.
- Improved persistence – students develop resilience when working through challenging problems.
- Clear mathematical communication – students learn how to explain their thinking step by step.
Perhaps most importantly, preparation helps students see complex problems as interesting puzzles rather than intimidating challenges.
How APSMO Preparation Workshops help
Our APSMO preparation workshops for Years 5–8 are designed to help students develop the skills needed to tackle Olympiad-style mathematics with confidence. During these sessions, students work with challenging problems in a supportive environment while learning practical problem-solving strategies.
Students learn how to:
- identify patterns and relationships
- break complex questions into manageable steps
- use diagrams and visual models
- test different possibilities systematically
- check and refine their solutions
Rather than focusing only on answers, the workshops emphasise how students think through problems.
This approach helps students develop the habits of mind used by strong mathematical problem solvers.
What Students Gain from APSMO Preparation
Students attending APSMO preparation workshops will:
- Practise authentic Olympiad-style problems – students work with questions similar to those used in APSMO competitions.
- Learn proven problem-solving strategies – students are introduced to techniques used in mathematical Olympiad problem solving.
- Discuss different approaches to solutions – students discover that there are often multiple ways to solve the same problem.
- Build confidence through guided practice – as students gain experience, they become more comfortable tackling unfamiliar questions.
Many students find that problem solving becomes one of the most enjoyable aspects of mathematics once they understand how to approach these challenges.
Help Your Child Approach APSMO With Confidence
As the first APSMO competition approaches in May, this is an excellent time for students to begin practising Olympiad-style problems. Even a short period of targeted preparation can help students:
- feel more confident when reading challenging questions
- recognise useful problem-solving strategies
- organise their thinking clearly
- enjoy the process of solving complex problems
For many students, preparation transforms the competition from something intimidating into an exciting mathematical challenge. To learn more about our APSMO Preparation workshops, click here.
