Mathematics – Year 07
By the end of Year Seven, students are expected to be able to make the connections between whole numbers and index notation, and the relationship between perfect squares and square roots. They connect the laws and properties for number to algebra. Students solve simple numerical problems involving angles formed by a transversal crossing parallel line. They determine the sample space for simple experiments and assign probabilities to likely outcomes. Students calculate the mean, mode, median and range for data sets. The third year of NAPLAN provides insights into individual student’s progress and highlights areas that require support or extension.
Mathematics – Year 08
By the end of Year Eight, students are expected to be able to solve everyday problems involving rates, ratios and percentages. They use efficient strategies to carry out the four operations with integers, and simplify a variety of algebraic expressions. Students identify conditions for congruence of triangles and deduce the properties of quadrilaterals. They solve linear equations and graph linear relationships on the Cartesian plane. Students perform calculations to determine perimeter and area of parallelograms, rhombuses and kites.They convert between units of measurement for area and volume.
Mathematics – Year 09
By the end of Year Nine, students are expected to be able to apply the index laws to numbers and express numbers in scientific notation. They record binomial expressions. Students find the distance between two points on a Cartisian plane, and the gradient and midpoint of a line segment. They calculate the area of shapes, and the volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders. Students use Pythagorus’ Theorem and trigonometry to find unknown sides of right-angled triangles. They construct histograms and back-to-back stem-and-leaf plots. The fourth year of NAPLAN provides insights into individual student’s progress and highlights areas that require support or extension.
Mathematics – Year 10
By the end of Year Ten, students are expected to be able to expand binomial expressions and factorise monic quadratic expressions. They solve simple quadratic equations and pairs of simultaneous equations. Students use triangle and angle properties to prove congruence and similarity. They list outcomes for multi-step chance experiments, and calculate quartiles and inter-quartile ranges. The Ten A content is optional and designed for those students requiring additional content to enrich and extend their mathematical learning, whilst they complete the common Year Ten curriculum.
