Our expert tutors teach students how to break words down into sounds, and how to use letters to write words and simple sentences.
Does Your Child Draw Symbols To Represent Their Writing?
Literacy is reading, writing, speaking and listening. Young students are developing foundational skills, knowledge and understandings in literacy that will support all of their future learning. The early years are an extremely important time in the life of a student.
As young students develop their literacy skills they begin to understand that ‘black squiggles*’ on a page represent sounds, and groups of ‘black squiggles’ represent words and groups of ‘black squiggles’ organised in straight lines across a page represent sentences and convey meaning.
Optimise Learning’s Beginning Literacy workshop series is designed to give young students an optimal start as they begin to develop their understandings and attitudes towards reading and writing. Each workshop program in our ‘Beginning Literacy’ series has been developed by a specialised early childhood consultant.
Our Beginning Writing workshop program is designed for young students who are starting school next year and for students who are currently completing their first year of school. Writing is the process of drawing and organising symbols to represent language, and convey meaning.
Learning to write involves learning how to hold and use a pencil, and writing recognisable letters, words and sentences. When children begin writing, they are usually able to tell more complex stories than they can write.
During our Beginning Writing workshop program students will be introduced to the elements of a correctly written sentence. Students will practise recording sounds to form words, and then sentences. They will read and trace short sentences, rearrange words to construct sentences and attempt to write short sentences.
To maximise their child’s participation and learning, we recommend that parents participate in our Beginning Writing workshop program with their child. By joining in with their child, parents will learn strategies to support their child’s writing development.
To consolidate and extend their understanding of early writing concepts, students are provided with booklets that include exercises for them to complete in between workshops.
Each 7 page booklet in this series of 12, has been specifically designed to advance the writing skills of young students. Each booklet contains a variety of activities to develop a student’s understanding of early print concepts, their ability to spell and write CVC words and their ability to recognise some sight words. Students will practise listening for sounds in words and develop their early reading skills. By completing our early reading tasks students are developing their ability to write letters, words and simple sentences in correlation with *Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards.
*Achievement Standards describe the expected knowledge, understanding and skills of students at each year level. You can read more about Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards HERE.
