Many students can find fractions very difficult to understand.

Fractions are one of the most important mathematical concepts students need to understand in order to be successful in many other areas of mathematics, particularly as they move through primary school, and into secondary school.

Many students can find fractions very difficult to understand. Research has revealed that when tested, over 50% of year 8 students were not able to order three fractions with different denominators from smallest to largest. This lack of understanding can translate into difficulties with fraction computation and the use of fractions in other areas of mathematics, particularly algebra.

It is extremely important for students to be given explicit teaching and the follow up tasks they need to practise and consolidate their understandings of and skills in using fractions. Some students require more time and teaching than they receive at school to fully develop their understandings and knowledge of fractions. This is where our education team can help.

Suitable for students from Year 4 to Year 6, our FRACTIONS IN FOCUS workshop program is designed to fully immerse students into the mathematical concepts involved in fractions. Students will consolidate and extend their understandings of equivalent fractions, compare and order fractions with related denominators, revise the vocabulary of fractions and investigate the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Small groups of up to 5 students are taught by a qualified and experienced teacher. The program consists of 5 x 45-minute sessions.

Whilst the focus is on fully developing each participating student’s understanding of fractions, the emphasis is on doing so in an enjoyable and positive way. We also strive to ensure students develop confidence in their ability to solve problems involving fractions throughout this workshop program.

Up to 5 students from similar year levels can participate in each ‘Fractions In Focus’ workshop program, which is live, and facilitated by a qualified and experienced tutor. Optional homework tasks are provided following each workshop, enabling students to revise, practise and consolidate the skills that were focused on.

Our ‘Fractions In Focus’ workshop programs are scheduled regularly throughout the year.
